Egon Schiele (1890–1918) is internationally known for depicting the human figure in a heightened state of emotional tension. A pupil of Gustav Klimt, Schiele developed a distinctive style which still fascinates and affects audiences. His ability to capture intensity in a daring and explicit way acted as a precursor of many expressionist tendencies that followed in the later 20th century.
