
Backlit was established in 2008 with an aim of supporting emerging artists with affordable studio space as well as developmental opportunities through participatory and collaborative exhibitions and events with arts and creative professionals. In 2011 it moved to a new venue and with space allowing, seeks to expand its programme of contemporary visual arts through increasing the city’s provision of cross-art collaborations embedding and integrating more performative, digital, sculptural and heritage collaborations to the VA principal programme.
The venue supports programmed events with open workshops, screenings, talks, open studios and unique critical sessions on works in progress in facilitated by regional and national universities with both artists and the public.Housing 21 studio artists the venue continues to build a strong reputation for artistic innovation and demand for this is recognised by an average 250 strong audience at launching exhibition events to access diverse artistic practices. The organisation is applying for charity status to establish as an agency for supporting the emerging artist and increasing cultural participation in a regenerative area of Nottingham City.
