Sea of dreams II is a broad chronological survey of major Australian artists whose works are closely associated with the bay including Fred McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Penleigh Boyd, Clarice Beckett, Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan. David Aspden (1935–2005) is one of Australia's foremost painters who first came to prominence in the mid-1960s with his large ‘hard-edge’ abstractions. Aspden’s immersion in the world of music led to celebrated painterly compositions featuring glowing colour and gestural brush strokes that strove to evoke the energy and rhythm of classical harmonies and jazz.
