MAGICAL MYSTERY is a response to two of my favourite Australian movies, Jedda (1955) and Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). The series of paintings, created over a period of one and a half years, reflects the influence that both of these trail-blazing movies have had on my understanding of Australia.
Longline is a rope that runs between the past and now, from which moving sculpture, drawing and painting are strung. The work mimics the fluidity and jibber of each day, and suggests ways to balance and stay afloat.

The principle guiding my work is the belief that chance events open up opportunities of discovery. The chance event of a glitch, an error in a structured system, has been rendered in needlepoint tapestry with wool on canvas in an attempt to stabilise its ‘intrusion’ through aesthetic re-interpretation.

Comet Donati was first observed by Italian astronomer Giovanni Donati in the June of 1858. American astronomer G.P. Bond photographed the comet on October 9 of that year, the night that Comet Donati was at its brightest and most impressive from our vantage point on Earth. This image represents humankind’s first successful photographic capture of a comet.

Tony Curran’s new body of work translates simple digital brush marks into rhythmic, technophilic and hard-edged abstractions. By using fragments of observational drawings made on an iPad, the artist has remixed these into compositions that oscillate between random and constructed, abstract and figurative, human and machine made.
Deb Mansfield’s practice incorporates photography, tapestry, sculpture and installation. She has exhibited consistently, both locally and interstate, since 2000.

James Lieutenant is an Australian visual artist living and working in Sydney and Canberra. Mainly using painting and screen-print, his art practice is focused on in-between spaces. (no) vacancy is an exhibition of new photographic and video work produced in response to a self-directed residency in remote Western Queensland. Drawing on tropes of the Gothic novel and employing tactics of Australian Gothic cinema, the exhibition enlists the barren desert landscape as the unfathomable menace to the human psyche.
