In 1981 Benjamin Buchloch wrote his essay 'Figures of Authority, Ciphers of Regression'. There, he lamented the fact that numerous early-twentieth-century avant-gardists—including Pablo Picasso, Francis Picabia, and Kasmir Malevich—had turned their backs on abstraction and 'regressed' to old-school figurative styles and themes.
