Artistic Process

Why should art be perfect when human beings aren’t?

After exploring hyperrealism for nearly 10 years, the need to create in immediate reaction to what surrounds me has manifested itself. Exploring new themes and emotions, often labeled as taboos by our society, such as sadness, anger and solitude. Through my work, I want the viewer to be conscious of his actions and of their impact. I try to bring people to question the beliefs and values.

The quality of the final result is no longer measured as it used to, on the realism and detail scale as they have stopped being tools and have become obstacles to the pure emotion and the movement necessary to the expression of my subject. I have let technicality go so that emotion could be felt through the work.

The collection of materials is important to me. I use organic matters (ash, feathers, etc.) and a variety of found objects, all of which contribute to the particular attributes of each piece. These objects become mine as I give them a new direction. But most important the realisation of my own environmental footprint, both as a person but also as an artist, allow me to act accordingly to reduce that impact. The recuperation goes as far as using domestic paints and food products (coffee, tea, etc.) as colourings agents.

The third dimension thus created brings a new drive to the work which, in turn, either changes the very essence of the object or bring a new understanding of man and his surroundings.

The use of acrylic paint and of pastels is recurrent in this body of work, the first allowing for stay in a minimalist frame and the latter bringing me closer to sketches, to raw drawing, to the very beginning of my artistic journey.

The use of typography in my painted work isn’t alien to my studies as a graphic designer. This way I try to conserve the simplicity of the subject and to have a clear communication axel.

The formats used have become bigger : this new canvas dimension allows for greater spontaneity in the treatment of the subject and for more physical involvement on my part.

Lately, installations have become a new way for me to treat a subject. By staging my pieces in the space they occupy, I wish to let senses other than sight contribute to the experience. For me, art must confront not only sight, but all senses.

New techniques such as distorted perspective, the addition of found objects and the use of typography either support or balance the themes I explore, all the while allowing to express my vision and my opinions on the world today, with the humor and irony that have become my mark.
