Trace: Performance and its Documents

It seems obvious when talking about performance that ‘you really have to be there’, to get the story right. While the experience of ‘being there’ adds something particular, it is still possible to experience the work at a remove, whether via a screen, photographic documentation, or even a third-hand retelling of the action.

Chinese Realities/Documentary Visions

Staging Action: Performance in Photography since 1960 The Robert and Joyce Menschel Photography Gallery,3rd floor

Focusing on a wide range of images of performances that were expressly made for the artist’s camera. Though performances are often intended to be experienced live, in real time, with photography playing an ancillary function in recording them, these works function as independent, expressive pictures, often staged in the absence of a public audience.

The Unilever Series: Sunflower Seeds by Ai Weiwei

Sunflower Seeds, by the renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is a sculptural installation that appears at first to be a vast, flat landscape of sunflower seed husks. Visitors are invited to walk across the surface of the work and discover that each seed is in fact a unique porcelain replica, one of over 100 million individual handmade objects which have been specially produced for the commission.
