Tanya Chaly was born in Sydney, Australia and currently lives and works in New York City.

She creates layered and involved worlds that draw on a wide range of influences from Gothic, Primitivism, Eastern Philosophy, Psychology, and Natural Science. The ongoing themes in her work are memory, myth, fragmentation, loss, illusion and the natural world.

In her recent practice she has been looking at the idea of turning nature into a cultural artefact. Presenting animals and elements of the natural world as the remains of a cultural memory.

She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and went on to to complete a Post Graduate Diploma from the University Of New South Wales, College of Fine Arts, Sydney, Australia. In 2002 she enrolled in a License Histoire De L’Art et Archeologie (Bachelor Of Art History) at the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France. In 2005 she was appointed a teaching position at the Ecole Media D’Art, Chalon sur Saone, France and in 2007 she relocated to New York City.

She has held several solo shows and been the recipient of a number of awards and prizes, including a NSW Ministry for The Arts, Gunnery Residency in Sydney, Australia in 2006. Recent shows for 2012 include, Rara Avis, One Mile Gallery Kingston NY, Masur Museum of Art, Louisiana, “Flora and Fauna- Narrative Through Iconography”, SUNY Geneseo NY, NYC Works on Paper, Jeffrey Leder Gallery, NY, and Treasured- Honoring Precious and Vanishing Worlds, The AnnMarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Maryland.
