In 1981 my father sailed his boat into the bay of Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. From there he, my mother and brother were transferred to Pulau Bidong where they lived for several months before being accepted into Australia.

My Dad the People Smuggler | Phuong Ngo

Working with documentary and portrait photography, Ngo’s practice studies the disjunction between war as an historical event and its impact on individual histories. This exhibition documents the personal consequences of his family’s past and their experience on the island of Pulau Bidong, a United Nations refugee camp established at the end of the Vietnam War in 1979.

PHUONG NGO: DOMINO THEORY

Domino Theory is the theory that a political event in one country will cause similar events in neighbouring countries. By reinterpreting Domino Theory through the key players involved with Communism and the Vietnam War, this exhibition focuses on how this conflict was realised in relation to the ideals that prompted the actions of the West.
