Ann Thomas was born in the United States and moved to Melbourne in 2010 via Texas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Minnesota. Thomas makes sculptures, paintings, photographs, written word and mixed media artwork. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Thomas makes work that deals with the documentation of events and the question of how they can be presented. The work tries to express this by incorporating paper art, found objects and written word that ranges from original poetry to social commentary.

Her most recent work is a mixed media sculptural trilogy Defining My Life in Texas based on her years living in rural Texas. This trilogy employs the “tame” medium of hand painted origami with mixed media to explore more serious subjects. “This trilogy was created around the concept of shelter and what that meant for me in rural Texas. The contradiction of a decorous, genteel exterior concealing racism and bigotry reflects the complex layers of contemporary life in the old South. Incorporating dictionaries into this book art allowed me to write my own definitions of My Life in Texas.”
