Emily Floyd’s new sculpture, Abstract Labour has recently been installed outside the main entrance to the Heide museum, and will become part of the of the permanent outdoor sculpture collection at Heide. Abstract Labour’s fourteen painted aluminum letter-shapes, which spell out the work’s title, have been designed to house books or coloured blocks for children to play.

Abstract Labour will function as a temporary library and encourage interaction, reading and discussion among museum visitors.

The sculpture has been created specifically for Heide and was funded by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria’s Victorian Public Sculpture Fund. It is the first in a series of sculptures commissioned and created with the grant, alongside new works for the Bendigo Art Gallery and the Lorne Sculpture Biennale.

The unveiling of Abstract Labour coincides with the opening of the exhibition Emily Floyd: Far Rainbow at Heide.
