Zilvinas Kempinas: Double O image

Year: 2008

In this thoroughly magical work, two ribbons of VHS tape are suspended in air, free from any wires or restraining devices, dancing playfully in the wind generated by two electric fans. Double O is an incredibly simple, and thoroughly enjoyable use of kinetic sculpture to harness and illustrate of the physics of moving air.

Zilvinas Kempinas’ extraordinary sculptural works and installations utilise unspooled magnetic video tape in order to transform physical space and subvert the viewer’s visual and spatial senses. Often incorporating large electric fans, Kempinas is able to create dynamic kinetic sculptures that are in a constant state of flux.

Double O comprises two electric fans that face each other in the gallery space, and two unspooled and looped ribbons of magnetic video tape.

In an extraordinary display of the physics of air and motion, the loops of video tape rotate and twist, suspended in space through the force of the air emitted from each fan.

Kempinas’ unique approach to installation and kinetic scupture utilises outmoded technologies such as video tape to create dynamic works that are both beguiling and miraculous.
