This body of work by Joshua Martin combines ancient ceramic shapes with contemporary street art to capture new forms of classicism.

Artist’s statement

The Meiping style vase originated in China during the time of the Song Dynasty and has a timeless shape that is not only beautiful but can be transformed in a multitude of different ways and still maintain the essence of its original style.

To enhance this timeless price along with other ancient ceramic wares, the Greek amphora and Black-topped ceramics, I have decided to express the philosophy of connection and communication using the contemporary and ephemeral form of street art.

By using stencils that are commonly used in street art I am trying to highlight polar opposites, yet create a subtly blended artwork. The opposing components of the work I am focused on are the ephemeral and non-ephemeral, connections and communication.
