I hold my breath, completely submerged, away from the cool dry air of my apartment. The warm water encasing me pulses, I feel it shudder through my skin, rendering my pink bath a disco. The beat from my neighbour’s personal environment flows through the thick concrete membrane bordering our dwellings and pollinates mine.
Underwater. The pressure in my ears builds, until it becomes excruciating. I fill my lungs with air and continue to shallow breath, keeping my lungs full to increase my buoyancy. As I rise the pain recedes, I hold my nose, close my eyes and blow out as hard as I can, as though I am trying to push the air out from my head through my ears. I feel them pop as my inside pressure matches that of my environment. I empty my lungs and begin to sink into the enchanting, mostly silent world of ancient corals and creatures of the sea.
