A book about Australian Aboriginal culture which refutes the deeply embedded notion that precolonial Indigenous Australians were hunter-gatherers who did not farm the land they occupied.

“The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating and storing – behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag” says Pascoe.

Pascoe was a Bununrong man with a varied career as a teacher, farmer, fender, Aboriginal language researcher, writer and tireless campaigner.

Dark Emu also won Book of the Year in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.
