THE MIGRANT EXPERIENCE image

Australian photographer Lee Grant was commissioned to explore and document residents who migrated to Australia and settled in Monash as part of our current exhibition. The 16 subjects who shared their stories came from diverse parts of the world including India, Lebanon, Greece, Italy, Sri Lanka, Sudan, United Kingdom, South Korea, China and Saudi Arabia.

Grant photographed people in an environmental portrait, in their home, both inside and outside. Each participant has recorded an interview recounting their journey to Monash in their own words. These interviews highlight their motivations for migrating to a new place, and the emotions they experienced as they arrived in a foreign land.

‘Australia is my home, … Australia [is] everything, you know. Australia it is my second mother, that’s what I always say.’ – Manal
